Planning a New Roof or Repairs? Here’s What You Need to Know When Choosing a Roofer.

Thinking about replacing your roof or tackling some much-needed repairs? A quality roof is essential for protecting your home and everything in it, but finding the right roofing professional can feel overwhelming, especially if you’ve never hired one before or have had a less-than-great experience in the past.

Here are some key tips to help you feel confident, informed, and in control of your roofing project from start to finish.

Do Your Homework

Ask Around: Talk to neighbours, whānau or friends who’ve recently had roofing work done. Word of mouth is one of the best ways to find a trusted roofing company.

Use Trusted Sources: Use online tools like Find a Roofer on the Roofing Association of New Zealand (RANZ) website. All RANZ member companies meet strict industry standards and are committed to professional development, health and safety, and quality workmanship.

Be Clear About What You Need

Whether you’re after a full re-roof, repairs to a leak, or flashing replacements, be clear on what you want done.

For larger jobs, it can help to write a brief describing the scope of work. Give the same information to each company you contact so the quotes are directly comparable.

Get Multiple Quotes

Ask for 2–3 Written Quotes: This helps you compare costs, timelines, and professionalism. Written quotes also reduce the risk of misunderstandings later.

Check for Quote Fees: Some roofers may charge for detailed quotes, especially on large or complex projects. Clarify this upfront — quoting takes time and expertise.

Know the Difference: Estimate vs. Quote

Estimate: A ballpark figure, not binding. It should be reasonably accurate — usually within 10–15% of the final cost under the Consumer Guarantees Act.

Quote: A fixed price for a clearly defined scope of work. Once accepted, it’s a binding agreement. Make sure it includes details like materials, labour, GST, and timelines.

Tip: Ask to be notified of any changes or additional costs before the work progresses, so you can approve or pause as needed.

Understand Pricing

Check What’s Included: Is GST part of the total? What are the hourly rates, materials costs, and how long is the job expected to take?

Labour Charges: In some cases — for example, if underlying damage is only revealed once work begins — your roofer may charge on a “charge-up” basis for actual time and materials used.

Experience Matters: More experienced roofing companies or those using specialised equipment may charge more but often get the job done faster and to a higher standard.

Factor in Extra Costs

Travel Charges: Time and mileage to your site (and sometimes to suppliers) are commonly included in quotes.

Deposits: You may be asked to pay a deposit, especially for large or custom projects. The quote should outline any deposit and refund terms.

Keep the Communication Flowing

Stay in touch with your roofer throughout the project. If anything changes — the weather, material availability, or scope — make sure variations are agreed on in writing to avoid surprises at the end.

Protect Yourself

Keep a Paper Trail: Save all emails, quotes, invoices, and receipts.

Know Your Rights: You are only required to pay the agreed quote amount for the scope of work specified. If the final invoice is higher without justification, you are legally entitled to pay the quoted amount with a written explanation.

A Final Word: Choose a RANZ Member

Hiring a RANZ Member roofer gives you peace of mind that you’re working with trained professionals committed to quality, safety, and industry best practice. Whether it’s a patch-up or a full roof replacement, getting it done right the first time can save you time, money, and stress in the long run.
